The palm forest in eastern Crete is a protected natural monument under Greek law since 1971. The palms are not imported coconut trees: Phoenix theophrasti, the Cretan date palm, is a wild endemic species that has regenerated here naturally for millennia. The grove covers roughly 200 hectares around the bay. Designated walking paths allow visitors to move through the canopy, but camping, tree-climbing and picking the small yellow dates are strictly prohibited and enforced.
This is the largest concentration of Phoenix theophrasti in the world. The beach sits at the southern edge of the grove, and the dense canopy frames a shallow lagoon — particularly photogenic in early morning light. A smaller secondary beach is accessible on the northern side of the headland via a short trail through the grove.
Getting to Vai from Heraklion, Sitia and Agios Nikolaos
By car from Heraklion, take the E75 motorway east toward Agios Nikolaos, then continue on the national road through Sitia. Total distance: 170 km, driving time approximately 2h30–3h depending on traffic. From Agios Nikolaos: 90 km, about 1h20. From Sitia: 24 km, around 30 minutes.
Parking at Vai costs approximately 4 EUR per day. The lot fills quickly in peak summer — arrive before 08h30 or after 16h00 to avoid queuing on the access road. KTEL buses from Sitia run to Vai in summer (check the current timetable at Sitia bus station). There is no direct bus from Heraklion to Vai. For day-trippers from the center or west of the island, a rental car is the only practical option.
Beach Facilities and Practical Prices
Access to Vai palm beach Crete is free. The organized section rents sunbeds and umbrellas at approximately 10–12 EUR per set (two sunbeds, one umbrella). Showers and WC facilities are available at no charge. Several tavernas operate directly on the beach — expect 12–20 EUR per person for a standard lunch of grilled fish or salad.

Vai is the most visited beach in eastern Crete. In July and August, the main beach is fully packed by 10h00. Practical strategies that work:
- Arrive before 09h00 — the palm forest is quiet, parking is easy and the angle of light is ideal for photography
- Return after 16h30 — tour buses depart and the beach thins out noticeably within the hour
- Go on a Tuesday or Wednesday rather than weekends
- Consider Itanos beach, 3 km north along a 20-minute dirt track — similar water quality, minimal infrastructure and far fewer visitors

The beach faces east and receives direct sun from sunrise until early afternoon. Natural shade on the sand is limited outside the organized sunbed area — the palm grove itself provides the best midday refuge and is worth exploring during the hottest hours rather than sitting on the packed beach.
