27,333 Airbnb listings

We analysed Airbnb listings across the whole island and the language of 281,874 reviews left since 2024. A clear picture of the guests emerges: more and more German and French speakers.

Once on the island, people get around by bus, by rental car and sometimes by shared van. Our field data show travellers who decide at the last minute, phone in hand.

A cooler summer, a year of fires

The season was slightly cooler than the decade’s average, with a stronger meltemi. But 2026 will be remembered as the year Crete burned the most in at least ten years.

More visitors, no more money

Airports are breaking records, but visitor spending is not keeping up. Stays are getting shorter, and rentals booked through platforms are taking a growing share.

What’s coming

Two major projects will change the way people arrive in Crete and travel around the island.

  planned opening of the new Kastelli airport, designed to handle up to 15 million passengers a year. Construction 70% complete in May 2026.
