Crete has several well-established nudist beaches spread along its 1,000 km coastline. Most are remote, reached only by boat or on foot — which keeps them significantly quieter than main resort beaches. Below are the confirmed spots with concrete access details and what to expect on arrival.
Best Nudist Beaches in Crete
Red Beach (Kokkini Paralia), Matala — The most visited naturist beach in Crete. Located 1.5 km south of Matala village, reachable by a 20-minute rocky coastal path or by water taxi from Matala harbour (€5–8 return, runs June–September). Sheltered cove with red-ochre cliffs, pebbly shore and clear turquoise water. No facilities on the beach. See the Matala Beach guide for the full access route and gorge options nearby.
Sweetwater Beach (Glyka Nera) — A well-known clothing-optional beach in Crete, between Hora Sfakion and Loutro on the south coast. Access by water taxi from Hora Sfakion (€5–7 one way, 15 minutes) or a 2-hour cliff path from Loutro. Named for freshwater springs that seep through the pebbles. One taverna on site, open May–October. The majority of the beach operates as naturist by long-standing informal convention.
Agiofarago Beach — At the end of a 30-minute gorge walk from the Agiofarago monastery car park (south Heraklion, near Matala). One of the most remote nude beaches in Crete, no facilities, consistent naturist use. Gorge walk is straightforward but requires proper shoes. Water taxi also available from Matala in summer (€10–15 one way).
Komos Beach — A 3 km sandy beach north of Matala, partially a protected archaeological site. The southern rocky end is clothing optional by informal convention. No organised facilities in the naturist zone; tavernas operate on the northern section.
Livadia Beach, Paleochora — The eastern end of Paleochora's long pebble beach, approximately 1 km from the town centre, is used as an informal naturist zone. Shallow, calm water, walkable from town.
Falassarna, Northwest Crete — The far northern sections of this wide beach, well away from the main beach bars, have established informal naturist use. The Falassarna beach guide covers the full layout, parking zones and best access points.
Practical Tips for Visiting Naturist Beaches in Crete
Legality: Nudism is not explicitly prohibited in Greece at informal naturist beaches established by convention. Public nudity in non-accepted locations carries fines up to €1,500. The beaches listed here are the recognised options.
Best season: Late June through mid-September for calm seas, reliable boat access and water temperatures of 25–28°C. October is possible but water taxis stop running after mid-September at most south-coast locations. Check current Crete weather conditions before heading to remote beaches in autumn — south-coast swells can cut off access.
What to bring:
- Cash — boat taxis and beach tavernas rarely accept cards
- Sufficient water — remote beaches have no guaranteed supply
- Reef shoes for rocky entries at Red Beach and Agiofarago
- High-SPF sunscreen — shade is minimal at most nudist beaches in Crete
Facilities: Only Sweetwater Beach has reliable on-site food and drink. Agiofarago and Red Beach have nothing. Arrive self-sufficient.
Crowds: July and August bring 80–150 visitors to Red Beach on busy days. For more space, arrive before 10:00 or visit in early June or September.
