Best Nudist & FKK Beaches in Crete
Crete has no officially designated FKK beaches, but naturist bathing is widely tolerated at remote coves across the island. Local authorities rarely intervene at isolated spots. Here are the most established locations:
- Red Beach (Matala), South Crete — 75 km southwest of Heraklion, 1 km from Matala village. Access via a 15-minute rocky coastal path (wear shoes). Dramatic red sandstone cliffs frame 150 m of beach. One of the oldest nude beaches in Crete, continuously used since the 1970s. No facilities — nearest taverna in Matala. Best June–September.
- Sweetwater Beach (Glyka Nera), Chania Region — 5 km east of Chora Sfakion. Reach it by boat taxi from Chora Sfakion (€5–7 one way) or a 45-minute cliff hike. Clothing-optional 200 m pebble beach with freshwater springs seeping through the sand. One seasonal taverna, sun loungers at €8/day. Best May–October.
- Kolokytha Peninsula, Near Elounda — 12 km north of Agios Nikolaos. Drive to Elounda then follow a 3 km dirt track or 20-minute walk to reach multiple secluded coves. De facto naturist beach with crystal-clear water and no shade. No facilities — stock up in Elounda. Best June–September.
- Lendas (Dyskos Section), South Heraklion — 75 km south of Heraklion, 1.5-hour drive, no bus service. The eastern beach (Dyskos) is traditionally clothing-optional. Rocky, scenic, one taverna in the village. Best May–October.
- Xerokampos, Southeast Crete — 90 km from Agios Nikolaos near Zakros, Sitia region. Two hours from Heraklion on winding mountain roads. Ultra-remote and near-deserted — naturist-friendly by default. Small seasonal café, basic campsite nearby. Best June–September.

What to Know Before Visiting a Naturist Beach in Crete
Legal status: Greece has no specific law authorizing public nudity outside designated zones. In practice, police do not intervene at isolated, remote beaches. Avoid nudity near family areas, tavernas, or roadsides.

Getting there: A hire car is essential for most nudist beaches in Crete. Budget €30–50/day for a small vehicle. Red Beach is walkable from Matala; Sweetwater is reachable by boat taxi from Chora Sfakion. All others require a car.
What to bring: Most naturist beaches in Crete have zero facilities. Pack minimum 2 litres of water per person, SPF 50+ sunscreen (pebbles and white rock reflect UV intensely), snorkelling gear (visibility averages 15–25 m), and cash for boat taxis. Crowds: July and August bring visitors even to remote FKK beaches. Red Beach peaks mid-summer — arrive before 10:00 or after 16:00. Kolokytha and Xerokampos stay quieter all season due to access difficulty.
Water conditions: South-facing beaches are sheltered from the meltemi north wind, making them calm and swimmable throughout summer. Expect slight chop at north-facing coves during wind events.
