How to Get to Falassarna Beach
Falassarna beach sits on the northwest tip of Crete, 59 km west of Chania. The drive takes 1h15 to 1h30 depending on traffic. There is no direct public bus service to the beach. KTEL buses from Chania reach Kissamos (40 km, about 50 minutes, €4.50 one way), but from there you need a taxi or rental car for the remaining 19 km south along the coast road. A taxi from Kissamos to Falassarna costs €25–35 one way.
Route by car: Chania → E75 motorway west → Kissamos → follow Falassarna signs. The last 5 km descends via a narrow winding road in good condition. If you are planning a day trip from Chania or Rethymno, see our Car Rental Crete 2026 guide for rental prices and booking advice — a car is the only practical option for west Crete beaches like Falassarna.
Parking: A large paid lot sits at the main beach entrance. Cost: €3–5 per day in peak season (July–August). Arrive before 09:00 in summer or the lot fills by 10:30. In October, parking is free and always available.
Falassarna Beach: Facilities, Layout and Water Conditions
The beach runs approximately 1.2 km, divided into several coves by low rocky outcrops. The main northern section (roughly 600 m) has sunbed hire (€8–12 for two loungers and an umbrella), three tavernas serving grilled fish, salads and cold drinks, toilets and outdoor showers. The southern coves are quieter, sunbed-free, and accessible via a short walk along the sand.
- Water depth: Shallow for the first 30–40 metres — suitable for children and non-swimmers
- Sand: Coarse white sand, firm underfoot, no seagrass
- Water temperature: 26–27°C in July–August, around 22°C in October
- Mobile signal: Weak — 1–2 bars on Cosmote and Vodafone
- Water sports: None available on-site as of 2026
At the northern end of the beach, visible from the road, are the excavated remains of ancient Falassarna, a Minoan-era port city. The site is free to visit and takes about 20 minutes to walk through.
Best Time to Visit and the Falassarna Sunset
Falassarna faces almost due west — it is consistently rated the best sunset beach in Crete and one of the top in Greece. Sunset timing: around 20:30–21:00 in July, 18:45–19:15 in October. Skies are typically clearest in September and October for photography.
Peak season (July–August): The beach is extremely crowded. Sunbeds are taken by 10:00, parking is full by 10:30. Water is warmest but expect heavy tourist traffic on the road and at the tavernas.
Shoulder season (May–June, September–October): Strongly recommended. Crowds drop sharply, prices fall 20–30%, and the light quality in October is excellent. Water at 22°C is still comfortably swimmable. Before heading out, check current conditions in west Crete weather for 14 October 2026 — the northwest coast can catch Atlantic fronts that miss the rest of the island.
Low season (November–April): Facilities are closed and the beach is empty. West Crete receives significant rainfall in winter; see the pattern in the 13 October 2026 west Crete weather report. Still worth visiting for the scenery, but not for swimming.
If you are combining a beach day with a market stop, Kissamos has a small weekly market, and Chania is 59 km east — the Chania Municipal Agora in October is at its best for autumn produce before you head west.
