Island overview
Overcast skies cover the whole of Crete this Sunday, with fog reported at Heraklion first thing in the morning. No rain is forecast anywhere on the island, and daytime highs sit comfortably in the mid-twenties across all regions. The cloud is thick enough to hold UV values in the moderate band rather than high, but sunscreen remains advisable around midday.
North coast and south coast
The north coast is generally calm today. Chania sees the lightest winds on the island at 6.5 km/h, while Heraklion and Hersonissos stay below 12 km/h. Rethymno is the exception, with gusts reaching 20.5 km/h that will make beach umbrellas a challenge. The south coast runs windier: Ierapetra tops the island at 23.1 km/h and Makrigialos reaches 18.5 km/h. Waves on the south shore are modest but present, peaking at 0.36 m.
East Crete
Agios Nikolaos and Elounda share the warmest afternoon readings on the island at 26.5°C. Sea temperatures in the Gulf of Mirabello reach 24°C and waves are negligible at under 0.1 m. Sitia is slightly cooler at 24.7°C with light winds at 9.4 km/h and calm seas.
The mountains
The White Mountains above Chania and Mount Psiloritis in the centre will sit inside the cloud layer for most of the day. Footpaths at lower elevations are passable, but hikers heading above 1,000 m should expect reduced visibility and carry an extra layer for wind chill.
Sea conditions and UV
Sea temperatures range from 22.8°C at Chania to 24.3°C at Ierapetra and Makrigialos, still warm enough for a comfortable swim in mid-October. The calmest water is on the east coast and in sheltered north-coast bays, where waves stay well under 0.2 m. UV peaks at around 5.8 island-wide; cloud reduces actual exposure but the index remains in the moderate range between 11:00 and 15:00.
Swim verdict
Good conditions for swimming in east Crete and along most of the north coast. The Gulf of Mirabello offers warm, flat water around Elounda and Agios Nikolaos. The south coast at Ierapetra and Makrigialos is swimmable but the 23 km/h wind and 0.36 m swell will be noticeable on exposed beaches.
Practical tip for today
Fog around Heraklion is likely to linger into the late morning. Drivers using the E75 motorway or heading to Heraklion airport should leave extra time and use low-beam headlights. Conditions are expected to clear before midday.
