Island Overview
Thursday 8 October brings dry, settled conditions across all of Crete. No rainfall is recorded at any reporting station island-wide. Coastal highs sit between 22.7°C in Sitia and 24.7°C in Elounda, while skies range from fully clear in Chania and Rethymno to partly cloudy along the north-central and eastern coast. It is a textbook early-autumn day: warm in the sun, pleasantly fresh in the shade, and noticeably cooler once the sun drops.
North Coast vs South Coast
The sharpest contrast today is in overnight lows. On the north coast, Heraklion drops to 11.3°C and Chania to 15.0°C, producing a day-to-night swing of up to 13°C. The south coast holds considerably warmer after dark: Ierapetra bottoms out at 18.4°C and Makrigialos at 17.5°C, a direct effect of the Libyan Sea retaining late-summer heat. Afternoon highs are nearly identical on both coasts, so the difference is felt mainly in the evenings. Visitors based in the south will need a lighter layer than those staying in Heraklion or Chania.
Mountain Conditions
Coastal readings do not reflect the interior ranges. The White Mountains above Chania and Psiloritis above Rethymno will be significantly colder at altitude, particularly above 1,500 metres. Hikers planning gorge walks or summit routes should carry warm, wind-resistant layers and expect temperatures well below the coastal figures. Trails remain dry and accessible at this stage of autumn.
Sea, Wind and UV
Winds are light to moderate across the island, peaking at 15.6 km/h in Ierapetra and 15.3 km/h around Ag. Nikolaos and Elounda. The sea is very calm: wave heights top out at 0.4 metres in Chania and Malia, while the south coast is even flatter at 0.18 metres. Sea surface temperatures range from 23.1°C at Rethymno to 24.8°C at Ierapetra. The UV index reaches 6.0 in Rethymno, placing it squarely in the moderate band. Sun protection between 11:00 and 15:00 is still warranted.
Swim Verdict
Conditions are excellent for swimming. Sea temperatures above 23°C at every station, combined with minimal swell and light winds, make today a strong late-season bathing day. The south coast offers the warmest water, with Ierapetra and Makrigialos approaching 25°C. Northern beaches such as Hersonissos, Malia and Elounda are equally calm and close behind at 24°C.
Practical Tip for Today
The afternoon warmth is genuine, but the north coast cools sharply after sunset. A temperature drop of 12 to 13 degrees between midday and midnight is realistic in Heraklion. If you are dining outdoors this evening or heading out after dark, pack a light jacket. A thin fleece or cardigan is sufficient; this is not cold, just a clear sign that October has arrived.
