Island Overview
Friday 9 October brings a settled, mainly clear day across Crete. Highs reach 24 to 26°C from Sitia in the east to Chania in the west, with no rain forecast anywhere on the island. Overnight lows drop to the low teens across much of Crete, a reminder that autumn has arrived even if the afternoons still feel summery.
North vs South Coast
The north coast, from Chania through Rethymno and Heraklion to Hersonissos, sits at 24 to 25°C with light sea breezes. Rethymno and Hersonissos carry a few extra clouds today but no rain is attached to them. The south coast from Makrigialos to Ierapetra is fractionally warmer in the water, 24.4 to 24.5°C compared to 22.8 to 24.0°C in the north, and sits under clearer skies. Ierapetra records the day's strongest winds at 15.8 km/h, enough to notice on a small boat but not a concern on the beach.
The Mountains
The White Mountains above Chania and the Psiloritis massif above Rethymno are dry today. Anyone heading to the Samaria Gorge or the Nida Plateau should carry a layer: afternoon valley temperatures reach 25°C, but exposed ridges above 1,500 m are noticeably cooler. The overnight low of 11.6°C recorded in Heraklion gives a sense of what higher terrain experiences after dark.
Sea, Wind and UV
Sea temperatures range from 22.8°C at Chania to 24.5°C at Ierapetra. Wave heights are minimal across the board, between 0.12 m and 0.46 m, suiting swimmers, paddleboarders and kayakers equally well. Wind stays below 16 km/h everywhere on the island. UV peaks at 6.0 in Rethymno, at the top of the moderate band. Sunscreen remains relevant, particularly between 11:00 and 15:00.
Swim Verdict
Good swimming conditions at every point on the coast today. The south coast holds one to two degrees more warmth in the water than the north, making Ierapetra, Makrigialos and the Gulf of Mirabello the pick for those who prioritise water temperature. Seas are flat island-wide. There is no reason to skip the beach.
Practical Tip
Pack a light jacket for the evening. The gap between today's afternoon high and overnight low reaches 13°C in Heraklion. Terrace restaurants cool quickly after sunset, and the drive back from a coastal dinner can feel sharply colder than the afternoon swim that preceded it. A thin layer in your bag costs nothing and solves the problem entirely.
