Samaria Gorge

Europe's longest gorge, 16 km from Xyloskalo (1,250m) to Agia Roumeli on the Libyan Sea. The trail descends through towering rock walls that narrow to just 3 metres at the famous Iron Gates. Open May to October; entrance fee applies. Wear proper hiking boots, start early, and carry 2+ litres of water — fountains exist but are spaced out. The return trip is by ferry to Chora Sfakion or Sougia, not on foot.
