Samaria Gorge is Crete's most iconic hiking trail, offering dramatic Mediterranean wilderness. The trek descends 1,200m through towering granite cliffs, narrow passages (including the famous Iron Gates), and diverse vegetation. You'll witness stunning coastal views as the trail opens toward Agia Roumeli on the Libyan Sea. This demanding hike requires excellent fitness. The steep descent challenges knees and ankles on rocky sections. Best visited April-May or September-October when temperatures are moderate. Start at Xyloskalo (1,200m elevation) and finish at the coastal village of Agia Roumeli. Essential preparation: bring 2-3 liters of water (none available on trail), wear quality hiking boots with ankle support, and start early to complete the 5-7 hour journey before sunset. Summer heat is intense, making early starts crucial. The trail is well-marked but physically demanding, so proper fitness preparation is necessary.
