Island Overview
Sunday 30 August delivers a dry, mainly sunny day across Crete. Rainfall is zero island-wide, and skies run from clear to mainly clear between Chania and Ierapetra, with only Sitia carrying some cloud. Daytime highs span from 26.8°C in Sitia to 31.4°C in Agios Nikolaos and Elounda. The defining feature today is wind: a strengthening meltemi is pushing hard across the eastern half of the island.
North vs South Coast
The western north coast is calm and pleasant. Chania tops out at 30.4°C with winds at 16.6 km/h; Rethymno reaches 28°C with the lightest breeze on the island at 14.4 km/h. Heraklion sits in the middle at 29.2°C and 23 km/h. Further east, Agios Nikolaos and Elounda share highs of 31.4°C and gusts to 33.9 km/h under cloudless skies. On the south coast, Ierapetra takes the strongest meltemi of all at 45.5 km/h, though its sheltered bay keeps wave heights to just 0.34m.
Mountain Areas
Temperatures above 1,000 metres on the White Mountains and Mount Ida will be 5 to 8°C cooler than coastal readings. No precipitation is forecast at any elevation, but exposed ridges will feel the same strong northerly flow affecting the lowlands. Wind chill is a real factor above 1,500 metres.
Sea, Wind and UV
Sea temperatures are uniformly warm: 27.7°C at Chania, 27.4°C at Heraklion, and 26.3°C at Ierapetra. Wave heights separate the coasts clearly. Chania and Rethymno stay below 0.82m. The central north coast runs to 1.1 to 1.24m at Hersonissos and Malia. Sitia is the roughest point at 1.4m. UV indices range from 7.5 to 7.75 island-wide, firmly in the high band throughout the afternoon.
Swim Verdict
Western north coast: excellent. Chania and Rethymno offer calm water and sea temperatures above 27°C. Central north coast at Heraklion, Hersonissos and Malia: swimmable with light chop. Eastern coast at Agios Nikolaos, Elounda and Sitia: gusty and choppy; choose sheltered coves over open beaches. Ierapetra surprises: despite the strongest winds on the island at 45.5 km/h, its bay geometry holds the swell to 0.34m and swimming is feasible for those comfortable with a stiff breeze.
Practical Tip
UV peaks between 11:00 and 15:00 across the island. Apply SPF 50 before reaching the beach and reapply after every swim. The dry Cretan air and sea breeze can mask how quickly skin burns at these index levels. A wide-brim hat and a midday break in the shade are simple measures that make a real difference over a long beach day.
