Daytime highs range from 32.7°C in Sitia to 35.3°C in Chania, a narrow spread that confirms uniform heat across all four regional units. Late-August conditions are running true to form.
North vs South
The clearest contrast today is not temperature but wind and overnight warmth. Along the north coast, the Aegean meltemi is most active in Chania, where gusts reach 20 km/h and provide meaningful afternoon relief. Heraklion, Hersonissos and Malia see lighter breezes of 10 to 14 km/h. The south coast is largely sheltered from the meltemi, and the consequence shows in the overnight figures: Ierapetra holds at 29.7°C through the night and Makrigialos stays above 28°C. Visitors sensitive to heat who are staying in the south should expect warm, still evenings.
Mountain Conditions
The White Mountains above Chania and the Psiloritis range above Rethymno remain dry and accessible. Gorge walks including Samaria are feasible, but hikers should start before 08:00 and carry a minimum of two litres of water per person to manage the midday heat safely.
Sea State, Wind and UV
Sea surface temperatures sit between 26.2°C at Makrigialos and 27.4°C at Rethymno. Wave heights are below one metre at every monitored location: the highest reading is 0.86 m in Chania Bay, while Rethymno and Heraklion are close to flat at 0.46 and 0.48 m respectively. The UV index peaks between 7.6 and 7.9 island-wide, which places it firmly in the high category. At this level, unprotected skin can burn in under 20 minutes.
Swim Verdict
Conditions are excellent for swimming at all coastal locations. Water temperatures above 26°C across the board, combined with wave heights well under one metre, make for comfortable and safe bathing from the Gulf of Mirabello in the east to the bays around Kissamos in the west. The light chop in Chania Bay is no concern for confident swimmers.
Practical Tip for the Day
Apply SPF 50 sunscreen before leaving your accommodation, not on arrival at the beach. A UV index above 7 means protection needs to be in place before exposure begins. Reapply after every swim and again at midday if you are staying out for an extended period.
