Island Overview
Crete opens 11 August with unbroken sunshine and zero precipitation across all ten reporting stations. Skies are mainly clear along the north and south coasts, and partly cloudy in the east and southeast. Daytime highs range from 29°C in Rethymno and Sitia to a peak of 33°C at Makrigialos, keeping the island well inside classic August heat.
North Coast vs South Coast
The north coast runs cooler and breezier today. Heraklion tops out at 31°C with gusts to 22 km/h, while Chania and Rethymno settle around 29 to 30°C under a steady westerly. Hersonissos and Malia follow at the same range, and the persistent sea breeze makes walking and sightseeing noticeably more comfortable than in the south.
The south and southeast are a different proposition. Makrigialos leads the island at 33°C and Ierapetra reaches 32°C, with overnight minimums staying at 27 to 28°C in both cities. Visitors sleeping on the south coast should expect little nocturnal relief. In contrast, the north cools to around 23°C after dark.
Mountains and Interior
Elevations above 1,000 metres in the White Mountains and on the Psiloritis massif will be 10 to 15°C cooler than the coast. Gorge walks are best started before 08:00. Carry a minimum of 1.5 litres of water per person and plan to be off exposed trails well before early afternoon heat peaks.
Sea Conditions and Wind
Sea temperatures range from 25.7°C at Makrigialos to 26.9°C at Heraklion and Chania, warm enough for all-day swimming without any cold shock. The Cretan Sea to the north carries swells of up to 1.0 metre at Chania and around 0.96 metres at Hersonissos and Malia. These are moderate and within normal August range for the north coast. The Libyan Sea to the south is near-flat: wave heights at Ierapetra and Makrigialos sit at just 0.2 metres, making the south coast the best choice for paddleboards, kayaks, and young children today.
Wind is the main variable. The strongest gusts reach 25 km/h at Makrigialos and 22 km/h at Heraklion. The Gulf of Mirabello (Ag. Nikolaos, Elounda) is the calmest pocket on the island with winds below 11 km/h.
UV and Sun Exposure
The UV index peaks at 8 across the entire island, firmly in the very high band. Unprotected skin can redden in under 20 minutes around solar noon. Apply SPF 30 or above before going outdoors, reapply after swimming, and plan shade breaks between 11:00 and 15:00.
Swim Verdict
Swimming conditions are excellent island-wide. The south coast offers the flattest, calmest water, while the north and east see light to moderate swells that are safe for competent adults and older children. Sea temperature is above 25.7°C at every location. Green flags are expected at all organised beaches.
Practical Tip for Today
Travellers based on the north coast who want calmer, warmer water should drive south to the Libyan Sea. The Heraklion to Matala route takes around 75 minutes via the Messara plain. Head back before 17:00 to avoid slow traffic on the mountain pass during peak afternoon hours.
