Island Overview
Crete closes October with a mild but unsettled day, temperatures ranging from 19 to 21 degrees Celsius across all regions. The dominant story is a west-to-east gradient in weather activity: the western prefectures carry the rain, while the south and east stay largely dry beneath grey skies. Winds are light throughout the island, and the sea remains in excellent shape.
North Coast vs South Coast
The north coast sees the most disrupted conditions. Chania faces a thunderstorm today with 3.8 mm of rainfall expected, the heaviest accumulation on the island. Rethymno and Hersonissos report light showers, and Heraklion begins the day under fog with minimal precipitation of 0.2 mm. Malia is overcast but dry, with a high of 20.6 degrees. The south coast is the quieter choice today. Makrigialos records zero precipitation and overcast skies, while Ierapetra holds at 20 degrees with just 0.6 mm of rain. Sitia, on the northeastern tip, picks up 2.9 mm from passing showers. Elounda and Ag. Nikolaos remain overcast with negligible rainfall, making Lasithi the calmest corner of the island.
Mountain Conditions
The White Mountains above Chania and the Psiloritis massif are in cloud today, with rain likely at altitude and reduced visibility on exposed ridges. High passes may be slippery. Gorge walks are possible in the east but inadvisable in the west until the storm clears. Bring waterproof layers for any inland hiking regardless of starting conditions at the coast.
Sea, Wind and UV
Winds are light across all locations, from 8 km/h in Malia to 13 km/h in Heraklion. Sea surface temperatures hold at 22 to 23 degrees Celsius, genuinely warm for the end of October. Wave heights are minimal, between 0.32 m in Makrigialos and 0.52 m in Chania. The UV index peaks at a moderate 4 to 5 around midday; apply sunscreen if you plan time outdoors between 11:00 and 15:00.
Swim Verdict
Conditions in the water are good. Sea temperatures of 22 to 23 degrees and calm swells make swimming comfortable island-wide. The limiting factor today is the weather overhead, not the water itself. Swimmers in the south (Makrigialos, Ierapetra) and the Lasithi Gulf (Elounda, Ag. Nikolaos) have the clearest conditions for a dip. In Chania, wait for the thunderstorm to pass before entering the water.
Practical Tip for Today
Pack a compact rain jacket regardless of where you are based. Showers can develop quickly in transition zones between the wet west and the drier east, and fog patches near Heraklion may persist into mid-morning. If you are driving the E75 coast road westward from Heraklion, allow extra time and use headlights through any fog. The afternoon is expected to be more settled than the morning across most of the island.
