Island Overview
A moist westerly flow is bringing light rain showers to most of northern and central Crete on Friday 30 October, while the south and far east hold dry under thick overcast. Temperatures are firmly autumnal but not cold, ranging from lows around 14°C on the north coast to highs of 23°C along the southern shore. It is a divided day across the island.
North Coast vs South Coast
The contrast today is clear. Hersonissos records the heaviest rainfall at 10.7 mm with gusts reaching 15.6 km/h, and Malia follows closely at 7.0 mm and 15.4 km/h. Heraklion sees 5.8 mm and a 14.5 km/h wind, while Chania and Rethymno pick up lighter totals of 2.6 and 3.5 mm respectively. Highs across the north sit between 18 and 20°C.
The south coast is a different picture entirely. Makrigialos reaches 23.0°C with no measurable rainfall, Ierapetra hits 22.7°C under dry overcast, and both Elounda and Ag. Nikolaos in the east stay completely dry with highs of 21.4°C. Anyone willing to drive two hours south from the centre will find a noticeably more comfortable day.
Mountain Conditions
The White Mountains above Chania and the Psiloritis massif behind Rethymno are likely capped in low cloud today, with wet and slippery conditions above 800 metres. Lower trails below the treeline remain accessible, but hikers should carry waterproofs and allow extra time on stone paths.
Sea State, Wind and UV
Sea temperatures are holding well for late October, ranging from 22.0°C at Rethymno to 23.0°C at Makrigialos. Waves are modest across the island: the roughest water is off Chania at 1.16 m, while the south coast sits comfortably below 0.6 m. Winds are light to moderate everywhere, peaking near 15 km/h along the north-central coast. The UV index reaches a maximum of 4.75 at Rethymno, which falls in the low-moderate band. Sunscreen is still worth applying for extended outdoor time.
Swim Verdict
Go south. Ierapetra and Makrigialos offer the best combination today: warm air at 22-23°C, sea temperature at 23°C, waves under 0.6 m, and no rain. Swimming is genuinely comfortable. On the north coast, the rain, a modest chop, and cooler air make conditions uninviting, though not hazardous.
Practical Tip for the Day
If you are based in Heraklion, Rethymno or Chania, treat today as an indoor or cultural day. The Archaeological Museum in Heraklion, the Venetian harbour in Chania, or a long lunch in a village taverna all make sense in this weather. Save the beach for the south, or wait for the drier conditions forecast later in the weekend.
