Island Overview
Crete wakes to wall-to-wall sunshine on 8 June 2026. Not a single millimetre of rain is recorded across all ten reporting stations, and skies range from clear to mainly clear in every corner of the island. This is a textbook early-June Mediterranean day: hot in the east, warm in the west, and dry everywhere.
North Coast vs South Coast
The north coast offers slightly cooler conditions. Heraklion reaches 29.5°C, Hersonissos and Malia both top out near 27.9°C, and Chania stays comfortable at 27.9°C with the lightest winds on the island at 13 km/h. Rethymno is the coolest station at 26.9°C, making it a pleasant base for those sensitive to heat.
The south and east run noticeably warmer. Ierapetra hits 30°C with a mild overnight low of 23.9°C, while Makrigialos reaches 30.7°C. The far east stands out: both Ag. Nikolaos and Elounda climb to 32°C, though a brisk northerly of 26.4 km/h will keep conditions from feeling oppressive.
Mountain Conditions
The White Mountains above Chania and the Psiloritis massif above Rethymno are snow-free at this time of year. Temperatures at altitude will run several degrees below coastal readings, making gorge walks and highland trails pleasant in the morning hours before midday heat sets in.
Sea, Wind and UV
Sea temperatures are firmly in swimming range across the island, from 22.2°C at Ierapetra to 23.8°C at Heraklion. Wave heights are modest everywhere, peaking at 0.72 m off Sitia and Malia and dropping as low as 0.18 m along the sheltered south coast at Ierapetra. Wind is strongest on the northeast coast around Ag. Nikolaos and Elounda at 26.4 km/h; all other locations sit below 22 km/h.
UV index reaches 8.25 to 8.6 across all stations today, placing it in the very high category. Sun protection is not optional at this level.
Swim Verdict
Good to excellent swimming conditions island-wide. The south coast beaches at Ierapetra and Makrigialos are particularly sheltered, with wave heights under 0.2 m. The northeast coast around Ag. Nikolaos and Elounda offers the warmest air temperatures but expect a light chop. Wherever you choose to swim today, the water is warm and the visibility will be clear.
Practical Tip
With UV above 8 throughout the afternoon, apply SPF 30 or higher before leaving your accommodation and reapply after every swim. The peak exposure window runs roughly from 11:00 to 16:00 local time. A hat and sunglasses are worth carrying even for a short walk to the beach.
