Island Overview
Crete opens the week under clear skies from Chania to Sitia. No rain is expected anywhere on the island today. Temperatures range from 29°C on the north-central coast to 33°C in the far east, and September sunshine remains intense: UV peaks at 7.5, placing today firmly in the high band.
North Coast vs South Coast
The north coast from Chania to Malia sees moderate afternoon breezes between 15 and 20 km/h, enough to soften the heat without disrupting beach plans. Highs sit between 29°C and 31.5°C, with overnight lows in the low-to-mid twenties making for comfortable sleeping.
The south and southeast coast is a different picture. Ierapetra records the day's strongest gusts at 42.2 km/h, with Makrigialos close behind at 39 km/h. Both towns are hot at 32 to 33°C, but the wind is persistent and strong. Ierapetra's overnight minimum of 28°C is the warmest on the island, a characteristic of the south coast's subtropical exposure in late summer.
Mountain Conditions
The White Mountains above Chania, Psiloritis above Rethymno, and the Dikti range in the east are all clear of cloud today. Temperatures above 1,500 m will sit around 15 to 18°C, making this a reasonable day for the Samaria Gorge or the higher trails in the Dikti massif.
Sea State, Wind and UV
Sea temperatures range from 26.3°C to 27°C island-wide, firmly in summer-swimming territory. Wave heights are calm to slight almost everywhere: the highest swell today reaches 1.22 m off Sitia, and most beaches see under 1.1 m. The exception is the south coast, where strong onshore winds at Ierapetra and Makrigialos create a choppy surface even with a modest swell.
UV peaks at 7.5 around midday near Rethymno. Index 7 falls in the high category. Sunscreen of SPF 30 or above is recommended for any outdoor activity between 11:00 and 15:00.
Swim Verdict
Today is a good day to swim across most of Crete. Water at 26 to 27°C and waves well under 1.25 m make the north coast from Chania to Malia the calmest option. South coast swimmers at Ierapetra and Makrigialos should expect a choppy surface and take care if the wind is blowing directly onshore.

On the south coast, morning is the window. The wind near Ierapetra and Makrigialos builds through the afternoon and typically peaks in the early evening. Beach conditions are noticeably calmer before noon. Carry SPF 50 and a light layer for the drive back once the sun drops.
