Island Overview
Crete opens Saturday 5 September under unbroken high pressure. Every corner of the island records zero precipitation and sky conditions ranging from mainly clear to fully clear. This is a classic late-summer Aegean day: bright, dry, and hot, with no change in sight before nightfall.
North Coast vs South Coast
A pronounced east-west temperature gradient runs across the island today. The north-central coast is the coolest end: Rethymno and Hersonissos top out at 27-28°C, Chania at 28.8°C, and Heraklion at 29°C. Move east or turn toward the Libyan Sea and the thermometer climbs fast. Agios Nikolaos and Elounda both reach 31°C, Ierapetra 30.3°C, and Makrigialos 30.6°C. The south coast is also the most sheltered from the northerly flow, which makes it the hottest and calmest shore simultaneously.
Mountain Conditions
The Lefka Ori above Chania and Psiloritis above Rethymno offer genuine relief from the coastal heat. Skies are clear at altitude with no storm risk. Temperatures on the high paths run 10 to 15°C below the coast, making morning hikes comfortable. Carry water and a wind layer for exposed ridgelines, where the meltemi is felt even if it is quieter than on the shore.
Wind, UV and Sea State
The meltemi remains active and is strongest along the eastern coastline. Agios Nikolaos, Elounda and Ierapetra all record gusts reaching 33 km/h today. Rethymno and the north-central coast sit at 25-26 km/h, while Chania has the lightest conditions at 17 km/h. UV peaks at index 7.2 to 7.5 across the island, placing it in the high category throughout the midday window. Sea surface temperatures are uniformly warm at 26.3 to 27.1°C. Wave heights on the north coast range from 1.26 metres at Rethymno to 1.5 metres at Malia, a normal meltemi swell. The south coast is a different picture entirely: Ierapetra sits at 0.32 metres and Makrigialos at 0.44 metres.
Swim Verdict
The south coast is today's standout choice for swimmers. Ierapetra and Makrigialos are nearly flat, suitable for children, snorkellers, and anyone who wants calm water. North coast beaches from Chania to Malia are manageable but carry moderate chop; enter with awareness and avoid offshore swimming in the stronger easterly gusts. The eastern gulfs around Elounda and Agios Nikolaos combine warm water with the highest winds on the island, so watch for surface drift if swimming beyond the near shore.
Practical Tip
UV index 7 arrives by late morning across Crete. Apply SPF 50 before leaving your accommodation, not on the beach. Reapply every two hours and after any time in the water. Fair skin can burn in under 20 minutes between 11:00 and 15:00. Seek shade or cover during peak hours if you have spent the morning in direct sun.
