Satellite Images Show Rare May Snow on Crete's White Mountains

Monday, 4 May 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
Satellite images captured in early May 2026 show significant snow coverage on the White Mountains (Lefka Ori) in western Crete, an unusual sight for this time of year. The White Mountains, reaching elevations above 2,400 metres, retain snow into spring, but the extent visible this May is notably impressive. Hikers and visitors planning to explore the Samaria Gorge or high-altitude trails in the Sfakia region should be aware that snow and ice may still be present above 1,500 metres. Trail conditions can change rapidly, so check with local authorities or the Chania Alpine Club before setting out. Layers and waterproof footwear are recommended even on sunny days at altitude. The snow-capped peaks are visible from many coastal areas of western Crete and make for striking photography from towns like Chania and Paleochora.
