Satellite imagery captures snow-covered White Mountains in western Crete

Monday, 4 May 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
Satellite imagery has captured the snow coverage blanketing the White Mountains (Lefka Ori) in western Crete. The White Mountains, rising above 2,400 meters, regularly receive significant snowfall during winter and spring months, creating a striking contrast with the island's coastal areas. Snow cover at higher elevations typically persists into late spring, making the peaks visible from much of the Rethymno and Chania regions. Hikers and visitors planning to explore mountain trails should be aware that upper paths may remain icy or snow-covered and appropriate footwear and layered clothing are essential. The E4 European long-distance trail, which crosses the range, may have sections that are impassable without proper mountain equipment during this period.
