Island Overview
An active frontal system is bringing thunderstorms to most of Crete on 27 September 2026. Eight of the ten monitored locations are reporting storm conditions, with rainfall totals already significant across the north and west. Temperatures are mild at 19 to 22°C, typical for late September, but the unsettled conditions warrant adjusting outdoor plans for much of the island.
North and South: A Clear Divide
The contrast between the two coasts is sharp today. Rethymno is bearing the heaviest totals on the island at 32.3 mm, followed by Chania at 26.9 mm. Heraklion, Hersonissos, and Malia are all under storm conditions with 6 to 13 mm of rain. The east coast cities of Ag. Nikolaos, Elounda, and Sitia are also stormy, though with lighter totals of 5.5 to 9.4 mm.
The south coast is a different picture. Ierapetra is recording just 0.4 mm under overcast skies, and Makrigialos 3.9 mm with similar conditions. These two locations are the clear outliers today and the most viable options for time spent outdoors.
Mountain Conditions
The heavy rainfall across Rethymno and Chania indicates that the White Mountains and the Psiloritis range are receiving substantial precipitation. High passes will be in low cloud and visibility on mountain roads will be reduced. Hikers should avoid routes above 1,000 metres today.
Sea State, Wind, and UV
Wind speeds are moderate across the island, ranging from 10.3 km/h at Makrigialos to 17.5 km/h at Rethymno. The north and west coasts are carrying a noticeable swell, with wave heights reaching 1.98 m at Chania and 1.32 m at Rethymno. The south coast remains calm at 0.32 to 0.34 m. Sea temperatures hold between 24.8 and 25.9°C across all locations.
UV index values of 5.5 to 6.2 are moderate to high despite cloud cover. UV radiation penetrates overcast skies, so sun protection remains relevant for any extended time outdoors.
Swim Verdict
Swimming is not recommended on the north or west coasts today. Active thunderstorms and waves of up to 2 m make those beaches unsuitable. The south coast at Ierapetra and Makrigialos is the exception: seas are flat at under 0.35 m, conditions are overcast rather than stormy, and water temperature sits at around 25°C. If you want to swim today, the south coast is the only reasonable option.
Practical Tip for the Day
If you are based in Heraklion or along the north coast, the drive south to Ierapetra via the direct inland road takes around 75 minutes and brings you into noticeably better conditions. For those staying on the north coast, today suits indoor sites well: the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, the Venetian fortress at Rethymno, or the covered market in Chania old town are all solid choices while the storm passes through.
