Island Overview
A settled late-September day across Crete. Partly cloudy skies stretch from Chania to Sitia with no rain expected anywhere on the island. Temperatures peak at 21.5 to 23.4°C across all regions, with overnight lows holding between 17.6 and 20.8°C. The sea retains peak-summer warmth island-wide, and UV levels at index 6.4 to 6.65 are still high enough to catch colour around midday.
North Coast vs South Coast
The defining story today is wind. The north and west coasts, from Chania through Rethymno to Hersonissos and Malia, see light breezes peaking at 14 to 17 km/h. Those are straightforward beach conditions. The picture changes sharply along the south and east: Ierapetra tops out at 34.6 km/h, Makrigialos at 32.9 km/h, and Sitia at 27.8 km/h. These winds are not dangerous, but they raise surface chop, scatter sand, and make open beach sitting uncomfortable for much of the afternoon.
Inland and Mountain Areas
Above 1,000 metres on Psiloritis, the Dikti range, and the White Mountains, temperatures will run 8 to 12°C below coastal maxima. Low humidity and clear spells make today a fine day for a gorge walk or a drive up to a highland village. Carry a layer for the return journey after sunset.
Sea State, Wind and UV
Sea temperatures hold at 25.1 to 26.1°C across the island, still at mid-summer levels. Wave heights are small everywhere: 0.48 m at sheltered Ierapetra, under 1 m elsewhere. UV peaks at 6.4 to 6.65 around local noon, rated high by WHO standards. Apply SPF 30 or above if you plan to be outdoors between 11:00 and 15:00.
Swim Verdict
Good swimming conditions across the whole island. North and west coast beaches offer calm, flat water: Heraklion bay reaches 26.1°C, the warmest reading today. South coast swimmers at Ierapetra and Makrigialos find equally warm water at 25.8°C, but expect persistent wind and surface chop on exposed stretches. Seek out sheltered coves where the swell drops below 0.5 m.
Practical Tip
If you are driving or riding the south coastal road between Ierapetra and Makrigialos, allow extra time. Crosswind gusts above 30 km/h affect motorbikes and high-sided vehicles on exposed sections. On the north coast, conditions are calm enough for an uninterrupted full day at the beach.
