Central Crete: Overcast, No Rain
Heraklion, Hersonissos, and Malia are under a thick overcast layer with zero recorded precipitation. Winds in this corridor are moderate, reaching 16.7 km/h along the north coast resort strip. UV registers at 6.0 in Heraklion despite heavy cloud, so sun protection remains relevant around midday. Visitors here can move freely without rain gear, though little direct sun will break through during the day.
East Crete: Light Showers, Calm Winds
Agios Nikolaos and Elounda are overcast and dry. Ierapetra, Makrigialos, and Sitia are seeing light showers with totals under 1 mm, no practical disruption. Winds are the calmest on the island in the east, between 9 and 11 km/h. The south coast runs noticeably warmer overnight: Ierapetra holds a minimum of 20.8°C, a reflection of its sheltered position below the Dikti range.

Seas are calm everywhere. Wave heights range from 0.22 m off Rethymno to 0.42 m near Sitia, gentle swells that present no concern for swimmers or small craft. Water temperature sits at 25 to 26°C across all coasts, very comfortable for late-September swimming. UV indices are moderate to high (5.1 to 6.5) across the island. Cloud cover reduces but does not eliminate UV exposure, particularly during midday hours.

Eastern and central beaches are suitable for swimming today. Conditions in Chania and Rethymno are a separate matter: seas are calm, but active thunderstorms create lightning risk in open water. Avoid swimming in the west while storms are active. Once they clear, sea entry is fine along all coasts.

If you are based in Chania or Rethymno and storms persist into mid-morning, consider a drive east toward Heraklion. The active weather front clears within roughly 90 minutes by road, opening up overcast but dry conditions for sightseeing or a beach visit. Check conditions before returning west in the evening, as convective storms in this region can rebuild through the afternoon.
