Island Overview
Crete wakes to another high-summer day on 19 July 2026. Clear skies stretch from Chania in the west to Sitia in the far east, with not a millimetre of rain recorded or expected anywhere on the island. Temperatures range from 29.5°C in Sitia to 33.7°C in Ag. Nikolaos and Elounda, putting the island squarely in peak July heat. Humidity remains manageable along the north coast where the meltemi is running, though lighter than mid-week.
North Coast vs South Coast
The north coast is catching the cleaner end of the meltemi today. Heraklion records the strongest gusts at 20.6 km/h, enough to keep beach umbrellas busy and take the edge off the midday heat. Chania is notably calmer at 11.5 km/h, and Rethymno sits at 13.7 km/h. Overnight lows on the north coast drop to 22 to 24°C, which allows for reasonable sleeping conditions.
The south tells a different story. Ierapetra records a minimum of 27.1°C, the warmest overnight temperature on the island today, and Makrigialos holds at 26°C. South-coast winds are lighter at 14 to 15.5 km/h, but the air stays thick through the night. Visitors staying in the south should plan for warm evenings and prioritise accommodation with good ventilation or air conditioning.
Mountain Zone
No station data is collected at altitude, but the White Mountains above Chania and the Ida massif above Rethymno will be significantly cooler than the coast, typically 8 to 12 degrees lower at summit elevations. Anyone hiking the Samaria Gorge should start early. The gorge floor heats quickly after mid-morning, and the final stretch toward Agia Roumeli is fully exposed to the afternoon sun.
Sea State, Wind and UV
Sea temperatures are at their summer peak: 26.7°C in Chania, 26.9°C in both Rethymno and Ierapetra, and 25 to 26°C along the north-central and eastern coastlines. Wave heights are modest island-wide, peaking at 0.88m off Sitia and Malia. The Libyan Sea in the south is nearly flat, with Ierapetra and Makrigialos both below 0.3m. All UV readings fall between 8.25 and 8.55, which the WHO classifies as very high. Peak UV occurs between 11:00 and 15:00 local time.
Swim Verdict
Green light across the island. Warm, calm water and no significant swell make conditions ideal at every coastal location today. The south coast offers the flattest water. North-central beaches around Hersonissos and Malia carry a light chop with waves near 0.88m, perfectly swimmable but noticeable from the waterline.
Practical Tip for Today
Apply SPF 50+ before leaving your accommodation, before the UV index climbs. Reapply after each swim. At a UV reading above 8, unprotected skin can burn in under 15 minutes around midday. A light long-sleeved layer and a hat are worth carrying if you plan to be outdoors between noon and 16:00, particularly on any excursion between sites.
