Island Overview
Crete opens September with a clean slate: not a millimetre of rain is forecast across any of the ten monitoring points today, and cloud cover is negligible from Kissamos in the west to Sitia in the east. Maximum temperatures range from 28.9°C in Hersonissos and Sitia to 31.9°C in Makrigialos, with the island settling into the final weeks of peak summer without disruption.
North Coast vs South Coast
The contrast between the two coastlines is evident today. The north (Heraklion at 30.2°C, Chania at 30.0°C, Rethymno at 29.1°C) runs roughly two degrees cooler than the south. Ierapetra reaches 31.7°C and Makrigialos 31.9°C, and both retain overnight lows above 25°C (26.6°C and 25.8°C respectively), making the Libyan Sea coast the warmest place to sleep on the island tonight. Nights on the north coast drop more noticeably: Heraklion falls to 19.8°C, which most visitors will find refreshing after the heat of the day.
Mountain Conditions
At altitude the picture is comfortable rather than hot. Psiloritis, the White Mountains, and the Dikti range all sit well below coastal temperatures today. Hikers on the Samaria Gorge trail or visitors in the Lasithi Plateau can expect pleasantly cooler air throughout the day. No precipitation is forecast at any elevation.
Sea State, Wind and UV
The north coast carries a residual meltemi influence. Heraklion logs the strongest gusts at 19.7 km/h, and the central north (Hersonissos and Malia) sits around 15 km/h with waves reaching 0.60 to 0.62 m, choppy but well within normal limits. The south coast is markedly calmer: Makrigialos peaks at just 0.22 m and Ierapetra at 0.24 m, conditions well suited to paddleboarding, kayaking, and anchored swimming. Sea temperatures are warm island-wide, ranging from 26.4°C at Makrigialos to 27.4°C at Rethymno. UV peaks at 7.65 in Rethymno and stays above 7.4 everywhere, placing it firmly in the high band. That warrants respect even in September.
Swim Verdict
Good to excellent across the island. The south coast earns the strongest rating today: calm water, sea temperatures of 26 to 27°C, and light winds make it ideal for all swimmers including families with young children. Northern beaches are perfectly swimmable, though the slight chop may give less confident swimmers pause. No wind warnings are in force and no precipitation disrupts any stretch of coastline.
Practical tip for the day: September UV is deceptive. The air feels cooler than August but the index barely drops. Apply factor 30 or above before reaching the beach and reapply after noon. Peak exposure runs from 11:00 to 15:00 local time.
