Island Overview
Thursday 29 May brings a uniformly dry day across Crete. Every station from Chania to Sitia records zero precipitation, and temperatures settle in the mid-twenties at sea level. The feel is classic late spring: warm but not oppressive. Skies range from mainly clear in Sitia to overcast in Rethymno and Ierapetra, with partly cloudy conditions covering most of the island.
North and South
The northern coast runs a degree or two cooler than the east. Rethymno sits under overcast skies at 24.1°C, the lowest reading on the island today. Heraklion and Chania are partly cloudy at 25.6°C and 24.9°C respectively. Overnight, Chania records the mildest minimum at 19.9°C, the warmest night-time figure across all reporting stations.
The eastern and southern coastline runs warmer. Makrigialos reaches 26.3°C, the day's island peak, with Ag. Nikolaos and Elounda at 26.1°C and Ierapetra at 26.0°C. Despite its southern position, Ierapetra is overcast today. Sitia, in the far east, is the one city forecast as mainly clear throughout the day.
Mountains
Hikers in the White Mountains above Chania or on the Psiloritis massif should expect temperatures 6 to 8°C below coastal readings per 1,000 metres of altitude. The upper sections of Samaria Gorge will be brisk at the start of the day and warm progressively through the morning. No precipitation is forecast at altitude, but a light layer is advisable for early starts.
Sea, Wind and UV
Wind is light across the island, peaking at 18 km/h along the northern coast at Heraklion and Chania, and dropping below 13 km/h in sheltered eastern bays. Wave heights are minimal: 0.58 m at Chania, under 0.25 m along the east coast. Sea temperatures sit between 21.0°C at Sitia and 21.8°C at Elounda, consistent with late May norms.
The UV index demands attention. All stations report values between 8.1 and 8.5, placing the entire island in the very high category. Unprotected fair skin can redden in under 20 minutes around midday.
Swim Verdict
Conditions are good for swimming island-wide. Water temperature is fresh but comfortable, waves are minimal, and no coastal wind warnings are in effect. The calmest water is along the east coast from Elounda to Makrigialos, where swell stays under 0.25 m. Chania's 0.58 m wave reading is slightly choppier but well within safe limits for most swimmers.
Practical Tip
Apply SPF 50 sunscreen before leaving your accommodation, not after reaching the beach. UV intensity peaks between 11:00 and 15:00 today. Partly cloudy skies at this latitude in late May do not meaningfully reduce UV exposure. Reapply after each swim.
