Island Overview
Crete divides cleanly in two on 17 September. A band of active thunderstorms is tracking along the north coast and into the central highlands, bringing heavy rainfall to Rethymno (30.7 mm), Hersonissos and Malia (15.2 mm each), Sitia (11.4 mm) and Heraklion (9.7 mm). Chania catches the western edge of the system with lighter showers at 2.9 mm. The south Libyan coast and the northeast gulf stay almost completely dry, though strong winds are the trade-off.
North Coast vs South Coast
On the north coast, temperatures reach 23 to 25 °C but feel noticeably cooler under storm clouds and gusty northerly winds of 22 to 25 km/h. Thunder is likely throughout the morning and into the afternoon in Rethymno, Hersonissos, Malia and Heraklion. Outdoor plans on this side of the island are unreliable today.
The south Libyan coast offers dry skies and slightly warmer air, with Ierapetra peaking at 25.7 °C and Makrigialos at 25.5 °C. The catch is wind: gusts reach 41.9 km/h at Ierapetra and 38 km/h at Makrigialos, enough to upend beach furniture and make exposed stretches genuinely unpleasant. Ag. Nikolaos and Elounda in the northeast sit under solid cloud cover with no rainfall forecast and wind around 31 km/h.
Mountain Conditions
The White Mountains above Chania and the Psiloritis massif above Rethymno are inside the storm system today. Visibility above 1,000 m will be poor, and lightning risk on exposed ridges is elevated throughout the day. Gorge walks and summit hikes should be postponed. Check conditions before any planned excursion into the interior.
Sea, Wind and UV
Sea temperatures hold at a warm 25.8 to 26.6 °C across the whole island. North coast wave heights range from 1.24 m off Rethymno to 1.58 m off Chania, making open-beach entries uncomfortable. The south coast is considerably calmer, with waves of just 0.52 m at Makrigialos and 0.56 m at Ierapetra. UV sits at a moderate-to-high 5.2 in storm-covered Rethymno and up to 6.85 at Makrigialos. Sun protection is still relevant even under overcast skies, particularly in the south and east where cloud breaks are possible.
Swim Verdict
North coast beaches are not recommended today. Active storms, wave heights between 1.3 and 1.6 m, and gusty winds create poor and potentially unsafe conditions. The south coast offers flat water but wind gusts near 40 km/h bring their own hazards on shore. The most viable option is a sheltered cove around Elounda or Ag. Nikolaos: no rain forecast, waves around 1.1 to 1.2 m, and sea temperature a warm 26.5 °C.
Practical Tip for the Day
If a beach day is non-negotiable, travel south to Ierapetra or Makrigialos for dry skies and calm water. Secure or store your beach umbrella before you leave your gear unattended: gusts above 38 km/h can send an unanchored parasol airborne without warning. If your base is on the north coast, use the morning for a museum visit in Heraklion or an inland drive through a Cretan wine village and reassess conditions after midday.
