Island overview
A cloudless August day settles over Crete on Wednesday 5 August. Every station from Chania to Sitia records zero precipitation and skies that range from clear to mainly clear. Temperatures peak between 29 and 34 degrees Celsius depending on location, with the eastern end of the island running distinctly hotter than the west.
North coast versus south coast
The north coast sees highs in the 30 to 31 degree range across Heraklion, Hersonissos and Malia, with Rethymno slightly cooler at 29.8. A moderate meltemi blows at 19 to 25 km/h along the central and eastern north shore, easing to just 12.6 km/h in Chania bay. The south coast tells a different story overnight: Ierapetra and Makrigialos barely drop below 26 degrees after dark, making them noticeably warm for anyone sensitive to heat. Daytime highs on the south shore reach 31 to 32 degrees, in line with the north but with less coastal breeze to moderate the feel.
Eastern Crete stands out
Agios Nikolaos and Elounda top the island today at 34.2 and 34.3 degrees respectively. Both cities sit in the sheltered Gulf of Mirabello, which traps heat efficiently in high summer. Winds there run around 19 km/h, enough to reduce discomfort slightly but not enough to bring real relief during the afternoon hours.
Mountain zones
The White Mountains above Chania and the Idi range behind Heraklion act as natural ventilation for the valleys below. Temperatures on the high plateaus, such as Omalos or the Nida plateau, will run several degrees cooler than coastal readings and offer a workable escape from peak heat for visitors with transport and a few hours to spare.
Sea, wind and UV
Sea temperatures sit between 25.4 and 26.6 degrees Celsius, among the warmest readings of the year for Cretan waters. Wave heights are minimal: 0.28 metres off Makrigialos, 0.3 metres at Ierapetra, and at most 0.8 metres near Sitia. The UV index reaches 8.1 to 8.4 at solar noon, classified as very high. Unprotected skin can burn within 20 to 25 minutes during the midday window between 11:00 and 15:00.
Swim verdict
Conditions are excellent across the island. The sea is calm, warm and clear. South coast beaches at Makrigialos and Ierapetra see near-flat water, ideal for families and snorkellers. North coast spots around Chania have the gentlest swell on that shore. Sitia and Elounda carry a little more surface movement but nothing that restricts swimming.
Practical tip for the day
Schedule outdoor activity before 11:00 or after 17:00. Eastern locations will feel significantly hotter than the thermometer suggests due to trapped heat in the Mirabello gulf. Carry at least one litre of water per person per hour of outdoor activity, apply SPF 50 sunscreen, and keep shade within reach at the beach.
