Back to newsA wildfire broke out on Friday morning at around 11:00 AM near the village of Ini, in the Arkalokhori area of Heraklion prefecture, central Crete. The fire is burning through agricultural land and prompted the Fire Brigade Operations Center to deploy 42 firefighters to the scene. Arkalokhori is located approximately 25 kilometers south of Heraklion city, inland from the northern coast.
Tourists traveling through or visiting the broader Heraklion region should be aware that smoke may be visible from nearby roads and that local traffic could be affected by emergency vehicle movements. Visitors are advised to avoid the Arkalokhori area until authorities declare the fire under control. Follow updates from local authorities and check road conditions before traveling south from Heraklion toward the Mesara plain or Lasithi plateau.
