Back to newsThe municipality of Sfakia, in the Chania regional unit of western Crete, successfully completed its 8th two-day stray animal sterilization campaign, with 58 animals sterilized during the event. The initiative is part of an ongoing effort coordinated between local authorities, volunteer organizations, and residents to manage the stray animal population and improve animal welfare across the area.
For tourists visiting the Sfakia region, which includes popular destinations such as the Samaria Gorge and the coastal villages of Loutro and Hora Sfakion, this program is gradually reducing the number of stray dogs and cats encountered in public spaces. Visitors should still exercise caution around unfamiliar stray animals, avoid feeding them near dining areas, and contact local municipal services if they encounter an animal in distress.
