Back to newsThe Region of Crete convened a dedicated Working Group to strengthen the local beekeeping sector and raise the profile of Cretan honey on regional and international markets. The group's mandate is to develop a comprehensive proposal framework covering long-term support measures for beekeepers across the island.
Crete produces some of Greece's most prized honeys, including thyme honey harvested from wild mountainous terrain, which is exported worldwide and recognized for its distinct flavor and high antioxidant content. This initiative signals growing institutional commitment to protecting this agricultural heritage.
For visitors, Cretan honey is widely available at local markets, farm shops, and specialty food stores throughout the island. Look for certified local producers in areas such as Lasithi, the White Mountains foothills, and the Heraklion plateau. Buying directly from producers supports local farmers and guarantees authenticity.
