Back to newsThe small chapel of Timios Stavros, located on Psiloritis (Mount Ida), Crete's highest peak, has been left in a state of neglect after unknown individuals dumped rubbish around the site. The chapel, a cultural and religious landmark on the mountain, has been described locally as a source of shame for the area. Psiloritis is a popular hiking destination, particularly for those attempting the summit trail. Visitors planning to hike in the area are encouraged to follow leave-no-trace principles, pack out all waste, and treat religious sites with respect. Littering at natural and cultural heritage sites is illegal in Greece and can result in fines. The incident has prompted calls from locals for greater awareness and enforcement to protect the mountain's historic landmarks.
