Back to newsSamaria Gorge, one of Crete's most visited natural attractions, is currently undergoing testing of a pilot 5G-TERRA communications system. The operational evaluation is ongoing, with results set to be integrated into the project's technical deliverables and used to plan future phases of the rollout. The system aims to improve connectivity and communication infrastructure within the gorge, which stretches approximately 16 kilometers through the White Mountains in western Crete. For the roughly one million visitors who hike the gorge each year, improved connectivity could eventually mean better emergency communication and real-time safety updates on trail conditions. The gorge remains open during the testing period. Visitors should note that current mobile coverage inside the gorge is limited, so informing someone of your hiking plan before entering remains advisable until the new system is fully operational.
