Back to newsAuthorities in Heraklion are planning restoration work on the historic Morosini Fountain, the iconic 17th-century Venetian landmark in Lions Square in the city center. A meeting involving specialists from the Greek Ministry of Culture's Directorate for the Conservation of Ancient and Modern Monuments is currently underway to coordinate the intervention. Work is expected to begin in autumn 2026. Tourists visiting Heraklion this summer can still enjoy the fountain and Lions Square as normal before works commence. Once restoration begins, access around the fountain may be restricted. The Morosini Fountain is one of Heraklion's most recognizable monuments and a popular meeting point in the old town, so visitors planning trips later in the year should factor potential scaffolding or barriers into their itinerary.
