Section of Itzedine Fortress Wall Collapses in Crete

Monday, 11 May 2026/SourceHaniotika Nea/1 min read
A section of the western outer wall of Itzedine Fortress (Φρούριο Ιτζεδίν) has collapsed in Kalami, near Chania, in western Crete. The fortress is a historic Ottoman-era structure that later served as a prison during various periods of Cretan history. The collapse prompted a statement from the local KKE (Communist Party) Chania branch, drawing attention to the condition of the monument. Tourists planning to visit the Itzedine Fortress area should be aware that access may be restricted following the structural failure. The site sits along the coastal road between Chania and Souda Bay and is visible from the water. Visitors are advised to check local conditions before making a detour to the site. The incident raises broader concerns about the preservation and maintenance of Crete's historical fortifications.
