Platanias Requires Vegetation Clearance to Prevent Wildfires

Monday, 11 May 2026/SourceFlashnews/1 min read
The Municipality of Platanias, on the northwest coast of Crete, has issued a fire prevention notice reminding landowners and relevant parties of their legal obligation to clear vegetation from plots, open land, and roadside areas along rural and municipal roads. This maintenance must be completed and kept up through the end of the official fire season on October 31, 2026. The measure aims to reduce the risk of wildfires starting or spreading rapidly across dry land during the summer months. Tourists visiting the Platanias area, which includes popular beach resorts west of Chania, should be aware that wildfires are a real seasonal hazard in Crete from spring through autumn. If you are renting a villa or staying in a rural property, familiarize yourself with evacuation routes and follow any local authority instructions promptly if a fire alert is issued nearby.
