Satellite Images Reveal May Snow on Crete's White Mountains

Monday, 4 May 2026/SourceHaniotika Nea/1 min read
Clear skies over Crete on Monday, May 4 allowed satellites to capture striking images of snow still covering the White Mountains (Lefka Ori) in the island's western region, following recent May snowfall. The White Mountains are Crete's highest range, with peaks exceeding 2,400 metres, and late-season snow at altitude is not unusual. For visitors, the snow is visible from the coast and makes for impressive scenery, particularly from the Chania area. Hikers planning to explore the E4 trail or the Samaria Gorge should be aware that higher elevations may still have snow and ice, making trails slippery and potentially hazardous. Check conditions locally before heading into the mountains. The gorge itself typically opens in late April or May, subject to annual safety assessments by local authorities.
