Back to newsThe White Mountains (Lefka Ori) in western Crete are still covered in snow this May, as shown in striking satellite imagery. This is not unusual for the range, which peaks above 2,400 metres, but the extent of snow cover this late in the season is notable. Visitors hiking in the Samaria Gorge area or exploring the Omalos plateau should be prepared for cold temperatures and potentially slippery conditions at higher elevations, even as coastal areas enjoy warm spring weather. The gorge itself typically opens in late April or May, but trail conditions higher up can remain challenging. Layered clothing and sturdy footwear are recommended for any excursion into the mountains. Check local conditions before setting out, as weather at altitude can change quickly.
