Saharan Dust Storm to Blanket Greece This Weekend

Friday, 8 May 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
A new wave of African dust is expected to blanket Crete and mainland Greece this weekend. This phenomenon, common in spring and early summer, occurs when strong southerly winds carry fine sand particles from the Sahara across the Mediterranean. Visitors should expect reduced air clarity, hazy skies, and possible orange or yellowish tints in the atmosphere. Air quality may be temporarily affected, so those with respiratory conditions such as asthma or allergies are advised to limit prolonged outdoor exposure and carry any necessary medication. The dust can also settle on vehicles, outdoor surfaces, and pools. Outdoor activities such as hiking are still possible but may be less comfortable. The event is forecast to last through the weekend, with conditions expected to improve early next week as winds shift direction.
