Crete faces Saharan dust and heat wave as conditions gradually clear

Saturday, 9 May 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
Crete is experiencing a combination of residual Saharan dust and rising temperatures today as a low-pressure system moves eastward, gradually clearing the atmosphere. Visibility may still be reduced in some areas during the morning hours due to lingering dust particles in the air. Temperatures are climbing significantly as a heat surge moves in, with mercury expected to reach high levels across the island. Tourists should carry water and avoid prolonged sun exposure during midday hours. If you are planning outdoor activities such as hiking, gorge walks, or beach days, start early in the morning before heat peaks. Those with respiratory sensitivities should be aware that dust concentration, though decreasing, may still irritate airways. Conditions are expected to improve through the day as winds shift and cleaner air replaces the dusty mass from the south.
