Crete's Wettest April on Record Brings Lush Growth but Infrastructure Woes

Friday, 1 May 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
Crete experienced historically high rainfall throughout April 2026, with record precipitation levels recorded at dozens of weather monitoring stations across the island. This marks one of the wettest Aprils in recent memory for the region, affecting areas island-wide. For visitors arriving in May and beyond, the heavy spring rains bring both benefits and considerations. Vegetation is exceptionally lush this season, and water reservoirs are well replenished. However, some rural roads and hiking trails, particularly in gorges and mountain areas, may still show signs of erosion or damage from the heavy downpours. Before heading out on hikes such as the Samaria Gorge or other inland routes, check with local operators for current trail conditions. Coastal areas and main tourist zones are unaffected. Standard spring packing advice applies: bring a light rain layer, as occasional showers can still occur into May.
