Greece Bans Outdoor Fires as Fire Prevention Season Begins

Friday, 1 May 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
Greece's official fire prevention season began on May 1, 2026, and runs through the summer months. During this period, strict rules apply across Crete and all of Greece regarding open burning, campfires, and activities that could spark wildfires in forests and rural areas. Lighting fires outdoors, including barbecues in non-designated areas, is prohibited or heavily restricted. Violations carry significant fines, enforced by the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection. For tourists, this means avoiding any open flames outside designated camping or picnic areas, disposing of cigarettes carefully, and never leaving campfires unattended. Hiking in dry, forested areas during periods of high wind or extreme heat requires extra caution. If you witness a fire or smoke, call the emergency fire service immediately at 199. Respecting these rules protects Crete's natural landscape and the safety of everyone on the island.
