Samaria Gorge Closure: No Reopening Date After Weather Damage

Tuesday, 21 April 2026/SourceFlashnews/1 min read
The Samaria Gorge in the Chania region of western Crete has no confirmed reopening date following weather-related damage to the trail. Contractors are currently on-site carrying out restoration work on the path, but authorities have not announced when the gorge will be accessible to the public again. The Samaria Gorge is one of Crete's most popular hiking destinations, stretching approximately 16 kilometers through the White Mountains (Lefka Ori) National Park and ending at the coastal village of Agia Roumeli. The hike typically draws tens of thousands of visitors each spring and summer season. Tourists planning to hike the gorge should check with local authorities or their accommodation before heading to the trailhead at Xyloskalo. Alternative gorge hikes in the region, such as Imbros Gorge, remain open in the meantime.
