Crete Ends Decades of Energy Isolation With Undersea Power Cable

Friday, 29 May 2026/SourceFlashnews/1 min read
At the Economist Conference held in Chania, Yannis Maniatis, representing ADMIE (Greece's electricity transmission operator), presented the completed high-voltage undersea cable linking Crete to mainland Attica. The interconnection ends decades of energy isolation for the island, which previously relied entirely on local diesel-powered generation. Crete now draws power from the national grid, improving supply reliability and reducing electricity costs over time. For visitors, this means fewer power fluctuations at hotels and tourist facilities, particularly during peak summer demand in July and August. Maniatis also outlined the next phase of the project: digital transformation of the island's electrical network to improve monitoring and resilience. The conference took place in Chania, Crete's second-largest city, located on the northwest coast approximately 140 kilometres west of Heraklion.
