BOAK Expropriation: Rethymno Clarifies Its Non-Involvement

Friday, 24 April 2026/SourceFlashnews/1 min read
The Municipality of Rethymno has issued a public notice informing residents about the cadastral listing process for properties subject to expropriation along the BOAK corridor, the major east-west highway currently under construction across Crete. The municipality clarifies it has no involvement in drafting these lists and bears no responsibility for how the expropriation plan is carried out, directing any concerns to the relevant state authorities. For visitors, the BOAK highway project continues to affect road conditions and travel times in various parts of the island, particularly in central and eastern Crete. Travelers driving between Heraklion, Rethymno, and points east may encounter construction zones, temporary diversions, or delays. Checking local road updates before long drives is advisable, and allowing extra travel time when crossing affected areas is recommended.
