Massive fire engulfs food warehouse in Heraklion, still burning

Sunday, 10 May 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
A large fire broke out early this morning at approximately 4:37 a.m. at a food storage warehouse in the Malades district of Heraklion, Crete's largest city. The fire brigade responded with 9 vehicles and 20 firefighters. The blaze caused significant structural and material damage to the warehouse and was still active at the time of reporting. The Malades area is an industrial zone on the outskirts of Heraklion, away from tourist and residential areas, so visitors staying in or passing through the city center are not directly affected. However, travelers driving near the western outskirts of Heraklion should be aware of possible smoke in the area and increased emergency vehicle traffic on nearby roads. No injuries have been reported. Tourists with plans in central Heraklion can proceed normally.
