Crete honors fallen Cyprus conflict veteran Manolis Bikakis with memorial bust

A memorial ceremony was held in the Municipality of Archanes-Asterousia, in the southern Heraklion regional unit, to unveil a bust honoring Manolis Bikakis, a soldier from the area who died during the Cyprus conflict of 1974. The event brought together local residents, officials, and veterans in a tribute to one of Crete's fallen fighters from that chapter of Greek and Cypriot history. The municipality of Archanes-Asterousia covers a scenic inland and coastal area south of Heraklion, including the historic village of Archanes and the Asterousia mountain range. Visitors to the region can explore traditional Cretan villages, Byzantine churches, and nearby Minoan archaeological sites. The bust will be permanently displayed as a public monument. No road closures or access disruptions for tourists were reported in connection with the ceremony.
