Greece Conducts 60,000 Checks to Combat Livestock Pox Outbreak

Greek authorities have been conducting intensive inspections across the country, including Crete, to contain an ongoing outbreak of sheep and goat pox affecting livestock. Since October, more than 60,000 checks have been carried out and 109 individuals have been arrested in connection with violations of animal movement and quarantine regulations. Sheep pox does not affect humans and poses no health risk to tourists. However, visitors travelling through rural areas of Crete may notice increased veterinary checkpoints and restricted movement of livestock, particularly in farming regions. Local markets or events featuring traditional Cretan products derived from sheep and goat farming may experience some disruption. Tourists can continue to enjoy Cretan cuisine and countryside activities without concern. Authorities have not issued any restrictions affecting travel or public gatherings related to this outbreak.
