Greek Cruise Passenger Hospitalized With Hantavirus in Athens

Monday, 11 May 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
A Greek passenger from the cruise ship MV Hondius, on which cases of Hantavirus were detected, has been repatriated to Greece and transferred to Attikon University General Hospital in Athens in the early hours of Monday. The patient has been placed under strict 45-day quarantine as a precautionary measure. Hantavirus is a rare viral disease typically transmitted through contact with infected rodents or their droppings, not through person-to-person contact. The risk to the general public, including tourists in Crete, is considered very low. Visitors on cruise itineraries that include Greek ports should monitor communications from their cruise operator. If you have recently been aboard the MV Hondius and are experiencing flu-like symptoms, seek medical advice promptly and inform healthcare staff of your travel history.
