University of Crete Breaks Ground on Student Housing Expansion

Tuesday, 5 May 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
Construction has been approved for new student dormitories at the University of Crete, with technical and environmental studies cleared for the project. Work is set to begin with heavy machinery including five large cranes mobilized across the construction sites. The facilities will expand student housing capacity on the island, supporting the university's growing enrollment. For tourists, the construction zones may cause localized traffic disruptions near university campuses, particularly in Heraklion and Rethymno. Visitors driving through these areas should allow extra time and follow road signage around active worksites. The project is part of broader infrastructure investment in Crete and is not expected to affect tourist destinations, beaches, or major attractions. Construction activity will be most visible in residential and academic neighborhoods rather than historic or coastal areas.
