Heraklion launches wildfire emergency preparedness plan for 2026

Tuesday, 5 May 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
Authorities in the Heraklion Regional Unit held a meeting of the Regional Civil Protection Coordination Committee to plan emergency response measures for the 2026 wildfire season. Officials reviewed strategies to manage forest fire risks across the prefecture as the high-risk summer period approaches. Crete's fire season typically runs from May through October, with peak danger in July and August when heat and strong winds create hazardous conditions. Visitors hiking or driving through rural and forested areas should stay on marked trails, avoid lighting fires or barbecues outside designated areas, and check daily fire risk maps published by the Greek Civil Protection authority (civilprotection.gr). During red-alert days, access to certain natural areas may be restricted. If you see smoke or flames, call 199 (fire service) immediately. Hotel and accommodation staff can advise on any local restrictions in effect during your stay.
